Grade Level Reading Expectations

Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)

At Jones Elementary we use the DRA to monitor our students reading progress. The DRA is administered three times per year and the data collected is used to inform classroom teaching, create groupings for guided reading and small group instruction, and identify students in need of literacy interventions.

The DRA consists of a series of leveled books and recording sheets that are designed to allow teachers to determine students' reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension levels. The DRA may be used with all students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It is designed to be administered one-on-one, usually during the time that the rest of the class is engaged in independent reading or at a literacy center. Administration time varies according to the level of the book, but usually takes about 15 minutes.
